Recently the media has been full of the plight of George Best, former Manchester United footballer, as he fights for his life in hospital. Almost on a dayly basis we hear what progress, if any, Best has made as he fights a serious lung infection. So the question is this, who cares really! In my view and the view of many people who continually email the bbc’s various media sources to complain, he’s just a has been who brought about his own fate. But why is it that we feel the need to keep up to date with the suffering of former celebrities. Why is it that the media feels it is in the public interest to have consultants give press statements on a twice daily basis when, in actual fact, the only people who might care are his friends and family, and perhaps some hardened Manchester united fans? Why do we have this constant fascination with celebrities and what they have done with their lives, and what they continue to do with their lives, even when they aren’t really celebrities any more?
Because it's easier then finding real news, and getting real information.
you have a point! it's history! we don't need to know why fill the news with suffering although come to think of it the news is full of it so i don't think one more story will hurt
Normally I'd agree Claire, but in this situation, I actually want to know. I'm not old enough to remember George best playing football, but there's something about him that I don't know I can explain. When he speaks there's just some kind of aura that makes me realise what a great man he was, not just on the field, but as an honest footballing brain. I am a hardened Manchester United fan, have been for 20 years now, and I will feel sad when the day comes that he is no more.
i have to agree with clare who gives a damn
I'm not too interested myself to care whose doing what or every detail of someone's life, especially if it's being broadcast practically every day. To be honest, I haven't heard about this guy yet, but then I haven't been listening to the news as much lately because of being busy with homework. But I can also see Blackbird's point that if someone sees more in that particular person or is a big fan of their team, band, show, or whatever the thing may be,, how it would be important to that fan/admirer to know how they're doing.
oh please. it's history. i know i'm a manchester united fan but life moves on that's what i say
